Brooklyn’s Free Summer Family Fun

I’m exploring the wealth of family-friendly summer activities happening in New York City, and there’s an incredible lineup of free events for July 2024. From vibrant street fairs and lively music festivals to enriching cultural celebrations and outdoor movie nights, the city is buzzing with options. I’m particularly drawn to the diverse range of events, offering something for every age and interest, ensuring a memorable summer experience for families like mine.

Free Summer Fun in Brooklyn

Community and Culture Festivals

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast and Giglio Carnival in Williamsburg is a historic Italian American celebration that runs from Wednesday, July 10th to Sunday, July 21st. This event transforms the streets into a lively festival with rides, games, and food vendors. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience centuries-old traditions, including the unique “Dancing of the Giglio.” Special events include a children’s Giglio lift on Thursdays and Giglio Sunday on July 14th with a parade and mass.

Another significant event is the Flatbush Avenue Street Fair on Sunday, July 14th, from 12 pm to 6 pm. This fair brings Caribbean flair to Flatbush, featuring food, live music, and activities for the whole family. It spans from Parkside Avenue to Cortelyou Road, promising a day filled with community spirit and entertainment.

Arts and Entertainment Experiences

For art and music lovers, the New York City Poetry Festival on Governors Island on Saturday, July 13th, and Sunday, July 14th, from 11 am to 6 pm, offers a free weekend of readings, workshops, and performances. It’s a chance to engage with poetry in a beautiful setting, with acclaimed headliners and programming for all ages. I’m also noting the Live at the Archway series in DUMBO, which includes free concerts and art installations under the DUMBO Archway on Thursdays. This week, the event on Thursday, July 11th, features Brasil Summerfest & Noah Lyon.

Music fills the parks with various free concert series. In Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Summer Music Series at Bushwick Inlet Park in Williamsburg features jazz, Caribbean, and Latin music every Thursday evening. This week’s performance on Thursday, July 11th, from 6:30 pm to 8 pm, is the George Gray Jazz Coalition. Additionally, there are many outdoor movie screenings happening throughout Brooklyn this week, including in Brooklyn Bridge Park, Prospect Park, and Transmitter Park.

Active and Educational Outings

Families looking for active fun can take advantage of the Free Admission Days at Pier 2 Roller Rink in Brooklyn Bridge Park on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays throughout July. Skating with views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan is a unique experience, though skate rentals have a fee. For younger children, Tiny Storytime at Books Are Magic is a weekly event, held on Tuesdays in Cobble Hill and Thursdays in Brooklyn Heights, perfect for ages 6-36 months.

City of Water Day on Saturday, July 13th, is a city-wide event focused on raising awareness about climate change and harbor resilience. Various Brooklyn locations, including Brooklyn Bridge Park and Bushwick Inlet Park, will host participatory events. I’m particularly interested in the Community Science Seining at Brooklyn Bridge Park on Saturday, July 13th, from 10 am to 12 pm, where you can join marine biologists to discover the biodiversity of the East River through catch-and-release sampling. This offers a hands-on learning experience about the local ecosystem, which I think Emma would find fascinating.

For those interested in science and learning, the New York Aquarium in Coney Island offers free admission hours every Wednesday from 3 pm to 6 pm. Advance timed tickets are required and become available on the Monday prior. The recently renovated Aquatheater now features sea lion performances, adding another layer of excitement to a visit.

Exploring New York City’s Diverse Neighborhoods

Downtown Brooklyn and Beyond

The 4th Annual Abolition Commemoration Day at Abolitionist Place in Downtown Brooklyn on Monday, July 8th, from 10 am to 1 pm, is a meaningful event to recognize the end of slavery in New York and honor freedom. It includes special performances and guest speakers, offering an educational and reflective experience.

Summer Lunchtime Jazz Concerts are another highlight, with the Steven Kroon Latin Jazz Sextet performing in Downtown Brooklyn on Tuesday, July 9th, from 12 pm to 1:30 pm. Enjoying jazz outdoors near Brooklyn Borough Hall sounds like a perfect midday break.

Governors Island Activities

Governors Island is a hub of activity throughout July, with the New York City Poetry Festival being a major draw. Beyond poetry, the Climate Piloting Summer Kickoff on Saturday, July 13th, from 12 pm to 3 pm, focuses on innovative climate tech projects. There’s also “The Wheel of Climate Emotions” workshop on Saturday, July 13th, from 1 pm to 3 pm, which combines art, meditation, and movement to explore emotional responses to climate change. For a fun visual activity, the Climate Collage Making Workshop on Sunday, July 14th, from 2 pm to 4 pm, invites participants to create art from recycled materials.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Experiences

Brooklyn Bridge Park is hosting a variety of events. In addition to the free roller skating hours, there are Sunset Waterfront Walks on Tuesdays from 6:30 pm to 8 pm, offering an opportunity to learn about the park’s history, design, and ecology. A unique event is “The Big Busk” with Citizen Cope on Saturday, July 13th, from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm, where musicians are invited to participate in a community sing-and-play-along. For tennis fans, “The Hill in New York” Wimbledon Viewing Party takes place from Friday, July 12th, to Sunday, July 14th, offering a chance to watch the finals live with a championship experience, including British fare and sunset screenings of past matches.

I’m thinking about how Sofia, who is 13, might enjoy some of the more artistic and community-focused events, perhaps the poetry festival or even the Big Busk if she feels inspired to participate. Emma, being 6, would likely love the Tiny Storytime or the free outdoor art-making sessions.

Culinary Delights and Community Gatherings

Local Food and Drink Events

The Wasan Brooklyn Summer Festival in Cobble Hill, running from Monday, July 8th, to Sunday, July 14th, features free food from the Japanese restaurant Wasan, along with games. This sounds like a low-key, enjoyable way to experience local flavors. Industry City in Sunset Park is hosting RECESS, an evening event every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5 pm to 9 pm, featuring music from local DJs and chilled cocktails, creating a relaxed summer vibe.

Street Fairs and Community Parties

Beyond the Flatbush Avenue Street Fair, other community gatherings promise fun. The Vanderbilt Open Streets program in Prospect Heights runs on Friday, July 12th, Saturday, July 13th, and Sunday, July 14th, featuring various activities and performances. Highlights include “Skate Everything” on Saturday, a sprinkler event, and pop-up musical performances. Hip Hop Closet’s Annual Block Party x BNYDC’s Beats and Eats Festival at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Saturday, July 13th, from 2 pm to 8 pm, is set to be a major community celebration with music, food, and cultural activities.

These events are fantastic for experiencing community life and savoring local offerings. I’m looking for opportunities that offer a genuine taste of New York’s distinct neighborhoods.

Family-Focused Activities and Workshops

Children’s Programming

Several events cater specifically to younger visitors. St. Ann’s Food Pantry in Brooklyn Heights needs volunteers on Tuesdays, including July 9th, where children aged 10 and up (with guardians) and 13+ (without guardians) can help serve neighbors in need. It’s a way to give back while keeping families engaged.

Cara’s Caterpillars at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Carroll Gardens on Wednesday, July 11th, offers a musical performance for ages 3 and up. The Brooklyn Children’s Museum hosts a “We Move. We Groove. We Party.” dance workshop with Kadeem Alston Roman on Thursday, July 11th, during their Amazon Free Hours. This energetic class is suitable for all ages and introduces social dances through history.

For creative minds, the Little Shop, Big City: Artmaking Workshop at Central Library in Park Slope on Thursday, July 11th, invites children aged 7-11 to create collages inspired by local businesses. Shark Week at Adams Street Library in DUMBO on Thursday, July 11th, features a puppet show and craft. Storytime in the Park in Fort Greene Park also happens on Thursdays for ages 3-8 and is held at the Walt Whitman Library in case of bad weather.

Engaging Activities for All Ages

The Youth Basketball Clinic with King Hoops at Brooklyn Bridge Park on Tuesdays, including July 9th, offers free training for ages 4-17, with separate hours for beginners and intermediate players. Registration is required. The Summer Salsa Series at Atlantic Terminal Plaza in Downtown Brooklyn on Wednesdays from 5 pm to 8 pm, features live music by Cuarteto Guataca and dance lessons, making it a fun and energetic evening for everyone.

I’m always on the lookout for activities that spark curiosity and creativity for both Emma and Sofia. The combination of hands-on workshops, interactive performances, and community events throughout New York City this summer offers a wonderful way to explore and engage.
