Coney Island’s Iconic Cyclone Roller Coaster

Did you know that some of the most famous hot dogs in the world come from Coney Island? I found that the history behind them is quite interesting, with two main contenders for who served them first.

Eating Iconic Coney Island Hot Dogs

When you think of Coney Island, food often comes to mind, and hot dogs are probably the first thing that pops up. I’ve learned that there are two legendary places here for them: Nathan’s Famous and Feltman’s.

Nathan’s Famous has been around for over 100 years, and their original spot is still on the corner of Stillwell and Surf Avenues. It’s amazing how this place has grown into a global brand. They even host the famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest every year, which sounds like quite an event to witness.

Feltman’s, however, claims to be the very first place to serve hot dogs on a bun in Coney Island, dating back to 1867. I learned that Charles Feltman, a German immigrant and baker, is credited with inventing the frankfurter on a bun as a convenient meal for beachgoers. It’s fascinating to think about how a simple idea like that became so popular.

Experiencing Old-Fashioned Circus Fun

For a taste of something truly unique, I discovered the Coney Island Circus Sideshow. It’s presented as the last permanently housed, traditional ten-in-one circus show in the country. This type of show has a long history in New York City, dating back to the 1800s.

The current location was built in 1917, a time when sideshows were incredibly popular and rivaled even famous attractions like P.T. Barnum’s American Museum. You can expect to see classic acts like sword-swallowers, fire eaters, and aerial artists. I think this would be a fun and memorable experience for families, and tickets are quite affordable.

Exploring Marine Life at the Aquarium

The New York Aquarium is another must-see, especially if you have kids with you. I found out that it’s actually the oldest continually operating aquarium in the United States, having started in Battery Park, Manhattan, way back in 1896. That’s a lot of history!

Their Ocean Wonders: Sharks exhibit sounds particularly impressive, with interactive displays featuring many different species of sharks and other fish. Beyond that, they have sea lion shows, a 4-D theater, and you can see all sorts of sea animals like penguins, sea otters, and stingrays. Visiting an aquarium can always be such a great way to learn and see amazing creatures up close.

Joining the Mermaid Parade Celebration

If you’re planning a visit around the start of summer, you might be interested in the Mermaid Parade. I learned that it’s the largest art parade in the country and a beloved local event that kicks off the summer season. It’s organized by Coney Island USA and features a lot of creativity with sea-themed costumes, floats, and marching bands.

The parade attracts huge crowds, both for participants and spectators from all over the city. It sounds like a really vibrant and fun celebration of art and the sea. I think it’s a wonderful example of the unique spirit of New York City.

Discovering New Entertainment Venues

I was interested to learn about the evolution of the Coney Island art scene. From 2015 to 2018, the Coney Art Walls showcased many talented graffiti and street artists. Many of these artists have gone on to become very well-known since their work appeared there.

Now, in its place, a new outdoor entertainment space called the Brooklyn Boardwalk has opened. It’s a large area that started its season on Memorial Day Weekend. The opening event included live music, performances, and DJs, with a well-known headliner. I found that they also have several food vendors on-site, which is always convenient.

Satisfying a Sweet Tooth

For those with a sweet tooth, like my daughter Emma, I found a perfect spot. William’s Candy Shop has been serving treats in Coney Island for over 80 years. They offer all the classic boardwalk sweets you could imagine.

You can find cotton candy, popcorn, marshmallow treats, and ice cream there. Their signature candy apples are also a big hit. It’s located conveniently right next to Nathan’s Famous on Surf Avenue, making it an easy stop for a sweet treat after a meal.

Catching a Baseball Game

For sports fans, I discovered that you can catch a baseball game at Maimonedes Park. This is the home of the minor league team, the Brooklyn Cyclones, who are affiliated with the New York Mets. It sounds like a classic minor league baseball experience.

The stadium offers great views of the famous Cyclone roller coaster, which is a nice bonus. I also learned that it hosts other events like boxing and wrestling matches during the off-season. Checking the Cyclones’ game schedule could be a fun plan for an afternoon.

Strolling the Iconic Boardwalk and Beach

No visit to Coney Island would be complete without a walk along the Riegelmann Boardwalk. I found that it stretches for 2.7 miles and offers beautiful views of the ocean. It first opened in May 1923, so it’s a historic landmark.

The boardwalk is lined with various recreational opportunities, including courts for volleyball, handball, and basketball. There are also playgrounds for younger children, making it a great place for families. You can also just relax on the beach, soak up the sun, and enjoy watching the people go by. For a meal with a view, Ruby’s, the boardwalk’s oldest bar and grill, offers classic seaside food and drinks.

Riding Historic Amusement Park Attractions

Coney Island is famous for its amusement parks, and Luna Park is one of its most iconic. It’s home to some of the most thrilling rides, including the famous Cyclone roller coaster. I read that the Cyclone has been giving riders an adrenaline rush since 1927.

It’s described as the second-steepest wooden rollercoaster in the world, with a significant drop and many twists and turns. Luna Park also features other rides like the Thunderbolt roller coaster and the Sling Shot. Just a short walk away is Deno’s Wonder Wheel, a historic Ferris wheel that is over 100 years old. Riding it offers fantastic panoramic views of the boardwalk and the ocean.

Delving into Coney Island’s Past

For those who love history, I found the Coney Island Museum to be a very interesting place. It’s the only museum in the world dedicated to the history of Coney Island’s amusement district. They have a collection of over 5,000 items, including photographs, artwork, and vintage amusement park artifacts and advertisements.

I think this museum offers a wonderful glimpse into the area’s past and how it became such a beloved destination. It’s an affordable way to spend some time learning about the rich heritage of this unique neighborhood. This could be a good option for Sofia, who enjoys learning about history.

Enjoying Local Brews

On a warm day, I think it’s always nice to find a cool place to relax. The Coney Island Brewing Company is a great spot to grab a refreshing drink after exploring the boardwalk or the beach. They offer several craft beers on tap, including their signature Mermaid Pilsner and Mermaid IPA.

The brewery has moved locations a couple of times, but it’s now situated on Surf Avenue. It’s a nice place to unwind and sample some local flavors. I can imagine this being a perfect stop for parents to relax for a bit.

Spectacular Friday Night Fireworks

A truly magical experience I discovered is the Friday night fireworks shows. From late June through late August, the sky above Coney Island lights up with a spectacular display. The best part is that these shows are free to the public.

You can see them from many places around Coney Island, but I think the boardwalk or the beach would offer the most scenic views. Each show lasts about 30 minutes in the evening. This would be a wonderful, free activity to end a fun-filled day.

Attending Events at the Amphitheater

For those looking for evening entertainment, the Coney Island Amphitheater is a large, covered open-air venue. I learned that it hosts a variety of events, including concerts, comedy shows, and sports. It has a seating capacity of 5,000 people.

There’s also a place to eat called the Terrace Grill located behind the stage. The amphitheater is part of the modern Seaside Park and Community Arts Center. Checking their schedule in advance could help you plan for a great evening out. This might be a good option for older kids and adults looking for a live performance.
